Bagpipes on the Hill

I grew up a few doors down from a branch of the Canadian Legion, and I would often wake up on Saturday morning to the sound of bagpipes. You might think that I would have hated being woken up that way, but I didn’t mind at all. Over the years, I grew to really love the bagpipes. And I don’t have a Scottish bone in my body!

Yesterday Hubby, B.G., Bonhomme and I walked down to Parliament Hill to take part in the National Tartan Day Celebration. National Tartan Day was actually on April 6th, but yesterday was a perfect day to get out and enjoy the belated celebration. We packed a picnic lunch (which we supplemented by sharing an order of french fries from the nearest chip truck -yum!) and waited for the festivities to begin.

This particular celebration is one of the smaller pipe band presentations in Ottawa, which made for a nice cozy atmosphere, though B.G. still needed a little boost to get a good view:

The colors and the pageantry are wonderful, not to mention the music! Scotland the Brave is probably the most recognized song for the bagpipes. I heard it many, many times as the pipers practiced over at the Legion. I don’t know exactly what it is about the bagpipes that I love so much, but I find the music all-encompassing. You can feel the vibrations in your bones – when you’re listening to a massed bagpipe band, there is no room in your brain for anything but the music!

B.G. loved the dancing, especially watching the younger girls. She sat on the edge of the square to get a better view:

While B.G. and I watched the performance, Bohnomme had a blast running around Parliament Hill:

After the celebration, the performers gathered on the steps for photographs. The marching band’s leader is known as the drum major, and he carries a mace:

I absolutely love this shot:

After the performances we headed home, and made it back with time to spare before it started to rain.
