Win Two Tickets to the Jazz Festival!

Ed. May 13th: Congrats Amanda, you’ve won the Jazz Festival tickets! I’ll be in touch shortly!

This year’s Jazz Festival will take place from June 23rd to July 3rd at Confederation Park, with additional venues including the National Arts Centre, the Rideau Centre, Mercury Lounge and Arc the Hotel. The concert lineup is incredible, and long! The Jazz Festival is celebrating it’s 30th year of consecutive programming, and I took a peek at the Festival’s history to see how it all began:

The OIJF was founded in 1980 by local musicians Bob Misener and Tony Pope –subsequently joined by the late Bill Shuttleworth – who wanted to throw a summertime jazz festival to celebrate and develop the popular jazz scene in Ottawa. Jazz festivals were still a relatively new phenomenon in Canadian cities, and there really was no grand design behind Ottawa’s first edition.

The festival grew quickly, attracting such international names as Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Herb Ellis, Bob Brookmeyer, Wynton Marsalis and Milt Jackson. Larger and larger crowds came out each year, and the festival began stretching beyond traditional jazz and attracting new supporters. It also began to expand beyond the borders of its outdoor venue to include indoor satellite events and the late-night jam sessions that are so popular today. Some of the OIJF’s earliest supporters saw the potential of the Festival and worked to expand its scope.

And expand it did! If you’d like to know more about how the Jazz Festival grew from its original roots which had “no grand design” to the incredible international event that it is today, you can find the complete history of the Jazz Festival here.

I’ve got two Jazz Festival tickets to give away! To enter, visit the Jazz Festival website and check out the concert schedule. Leave a comment below indicating which concert you’d love to attend. Choose carefully – if you’re the winner, you’ll get tickets to the concert that you chose! Comments will close on Friday, May 13th at 7pm and I’ll contact the winner by email. Please leave an email address that you check frequently – if I don’t hear back from the winner by Saturday at noon, I’ll have to move on to someone else.

Good luck!

So many fabulous choices. But seeing Pink Martini would be particularly delightful. Of the many unfabulous musical choices in my partner’s CD collection, Pink Martini selections are the only ones that always makes us both happy.

    Here’s the funny story

The Ottawa Jazz Festival have reunited me with a lost branch of my family.

The minute I learn kd lang was coming to the Ottawa Jazz Fest bought 3 tickets on the front rows for me, my friend and my uncle visiting from France on those dates. I thought it would be a nice trip for him to visit the capital of Ottawa and what a treat to see kd.

I told this to some of my family in Quebec City and an older aunt told me, you know we still have family in Ottawa (my grand-father came from Ottawa). She put us in contact with them and there goes the invitations for meetings, dinner and they will bring us around to show us their beautiful city of Ottawa. They seems very proud.
They told me they love kd lang too but they are a bit old and don’t go there alone anymore. So we thought eh! let’s buy two more tickets and bring them with us. But there is no more tickets available for the front rows…

So That is what I want. 2 front row tickets to bring them to us see kd lang. I know it’s a lot to ask. But this trip is not yet started and it’ already full of surprises so we never know eh!

The Ottawa Jazz have reunited me with a lost branch of my family and I thank you for that.

If you can’t for kd, well maybe we could take tickets for Elvis Costello the night before and buy an extra one… because we’re 3 remember.
Thanks for the contest. this is exciting
I can’t wait to see my family’s hometown again
    Bye

BTW I used to be a fan of Elvis Costello in the 80′s-90s so it would be very nice to hear what he’s been up too for those past years… But I’d prefer to bring the family to see kd with us.
    thanks Isa
