It’s a Boy Thing

Ed: Congrats Jenn, you’ve won the family pass! I’ll be in touch shortly!

At least it is in our house.

When B.G. was born, we were determined not to surround her with girly-girl toys or dress her in pink from head to toe every day. I remember coming home with a big yellow Tonka truck when she was about one and proudly placing it in front her, thinking that it was sure to be her new favorite toy.

Not quite.

That truck and many others like it sat on a shelf collecting dust until Bonhomme discovered them. He hasn’t stopped playing with them since.

Not to say that little girls never like trucks,or that boys don’t play with dolls. But I can say from personal experience that there really do seem to be some innate differences between boys and girls that no amount of nurture can overshadow.  B.G. loves to wear dresses, her favorite colors are pink and purple, and she’d rather play with Polly Pockets than toy trucks any day of the week. After playing with his trucks, Bonhomme’s second favorite pastime is playing ball. I have yet to find out how long it would take him to get tired of either, because I always get distracted before he does.

When I heard about mothercraft Ottawa’s Touch-A-Truck event, I knew it was something that Bonhomme would love. Touch-A-Truck will take place on Sunday, May 29th in the Lincoln Fields Shopping Centre parking lot from 10 am to 3 pm. All kinds of big trucks and specialty vehicles will be on hand for inspection by curious boys and curious girls alike! I’m hoping to bring both kids - I think they’ll both get a kick out seeing the big trucks up close, and I expect that Bonhomme will be pretty much beside himself, especially if there are sirens! (I’m told there will be sirens :)

The cost of the event is $5 per person to a maximum of $20 per family, and all proceeds support mothercraft Ottawa’s wonderful programs. And in the spirit of what I’m now calling May: Month of Contests, I’ve got a family pass to give away!

If you’d like to enter the giveaway, please leave a comment below telling me why you’d like to win the pass. Comments will close on Monday, May 16th at 7pm and I’ll contact the winner by email. Please leave an email address that you check frequently – if I don’t hear back from the winner by Tuesday at noon, I’ll have to move on to someone else.

Good luck and happy trucking!

It’s a girl thing x two! For the last 3 years we have loved and supported this day and intend to May 29 as well!

  • Belinda T

Our family has always wanted to attend this although we were never able to as we would always have plans that day. This year there are no plans that day. I have supported Mothercraft with a few of their endeavours and would love to attend this with my three kids so that they may experience this. We have a boy obsessed with trucks and I’m sure my daughter would think this would be neat. PLEASE select us.

  • Sharlene

I think M would absolutely love the trucks! At 19 months, he seems to love all big trucks and buses. E would stare with awe and fright and I think O would ask a zillion questions about something nobody else would think of! Would be a fun time for the 5 of us.

  • Monique

What better way to support a great cause and surround our boys with real, honking, loud trucks? We went to this great event last year and the boys LOVED it! This is one of those events you can go to year after year. Thing 1 and Thing 2 still talk about having their pictures taken in the driver’s seat of the police car — I told them that was the only seat I EVER wanted to see them in!! They didn’t get it, but the cute officer sure did. ; )

It’s a lil boy and girl thing, and a big boy and girl thing in our house! The whole family loved it last year, and want to go again this year! I hope that we can win the pass, it will make all the kids (lil and big) very happy :) Also glad I saw this post, the event was in July in the past, so I assumed it would be this year.

Just like Bonhomme, my 2 year old is obsessed with vehicles. His current desire is to ‘touch’ all the cars, trucks and buses he sees, so this would be an amazing event for him. Thanks for all the hard work you do on this site!

Thank you for your website and blog. I’m a working mom in Kanata on a constant hunt for activities for our 20 month old son. His current passion is cars, trucks, buses, ..anything with wheels. He entertains us constantly with his “VROOM! VROOM!” sounds when he sees a passing vehicle. Winning a family pass would put a hug smile on all of our faces – and memories to last a life time.

I’ve got a 6 year old grandson who would be in 7th Heaven around that many big trucks. We may have to take him now that I know about it, free pass or no free pass.(but I hope I win).

My nephew has been in “AWWW” of any type of truck, since he was 2 years old. He is now 4 years old, and knows the names of EVERY type of construction truck/vehicle he sees, and often corrects his aunt!! LOL I would love to win the passes to take him to the “Touch-A-Truck” event – he would have a BLAST!! :o)))

  • K.

Definitely also a girl thing. Took then two-year-old daughter last year; she/we had a blast. The highlight was honking the horn of what I think might’ve been a massive city of Ottawa snow plowing truck? (An activity with wide appeal; the kid before her was in tears when his turn was over.)

Hopefully we make it back this year as, looking through the pix, I remember we had our own tears; she wanted to ride the little ATVs indoors, but lost her nerve at ‘go’ and had to be helped down while everyone else raced off round the track :(

  • Jackie

I have been meaning to take my kids each year, and still have not gone, so it would be great! thanks!

  • Rachel

I have a very active, happy 2 yo who would LOVE this! I’m new to the area and on the lookout for fun things to do with him, and hope I get to take him to this! Also, I have a friend who works a Mothercraft, and I think the work they do is amazing. I’m happy to give them any support I can!

Both our kids would love this event – it was our Father’s Day go-to until they changed the date last year. We really missed it!

  • Jenn

My daughter is fascinated with all things HUGE and finding out how/why they work. I also do home daycare and the little guy I look after is a typical boy that LOVES cars, trucks, etc etc etc. The look on his face seeing all these things together would be awesome!

I live with a mechanic, a fireman in training and a little boy that loves the boomba-boomba-dump (garbage truck) and alllll the weee-oooh trucks. Their brains would kaboom if I send them together!
